Here we’ve outlined the best, all-natural, over-the-counter alternatives to Ozempic to help contribute toward your weight loss goals, plus we explain why it’s important to work on a healthy, active lifestyle aligned with your doctor’s advice.

Type II diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough insulin, resulting in high blood sugar levels. It’s typically linked with being overweight or obese, and often losing this excess weight can reverse symptoms, or at least help you to manage them more effectively.

There are plenty of pharmacological interventions you can take, of course. Drugs like Ozempic have their place. However, where possible, those suffering with type II diabetes will generally be better served by losing weight and living a healthy, active lifestyle.

If you do need a little help – something to make your calorie deficit a little more effective, to counter some of the negative side effects of running a calorie deficit, and something to make the whole lot easier to stick to – then a natural alternative to Ozempic might be worthwhile. We’re talking about a natural thermogenic supplement.

Quick Verdict On Ozempic Alternatives

PhenQ Bottle

Choosing to use a good thermogenic alongside a healthy diet and active lifestyle is a much better alternative to going with something like Ozempic for weight management. If your physican allows, I would go with something like PhenQ.

PhenQ’s natural ingredients address multiple weight loss factors, potentially without the side effects of prescription medications. This approach supports safe and effective weight management, promoting overall wellbeing and sustainable results, helping you to do away with many of the side effects associated with running a calorie deficit whilst making everything easier to follow and more effective.

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic injection in hand

Ozempic is a brand name for the medication semaglutide, a prescription drug used to control blood sugar levels in those with type 2 diabetes.

It is within a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor) agonists, or incretin mimetics.

GLP-1 receptor agonists work by increasing the production of insulin in the body and decreasing the production of glucagon. Insulin is responsible for regulating glucose levels in the blood, while glucagon helps to increase blood glucose levels.

By reducing glucagon and increasing insulin, Ozempic helps to reduce blood sugar and improve glycemic control.

Ozempic is administered via injection subcutaneously (under the skin) once-weekly in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The drug comes in a pre-filled pen that delivers a precise dose of semaglutide.

The once-weekly dosing schedule makes it convenient for anybody to incorporate into their treatment regimen.

Ozempic’s efficacy is well established. Clinical studies have shown that semaglutide, when used as monotherapy or in combination with other diabetes medications, can effectively lower HbA1c (a measure of average blood sugar levels) over a few months. It has also been shown to reduce body weight and lower the risk of cardiovascular events.

In addition to its ability to lower blood sugar levels, Ozempic has also shown potential in reducing the risk of certain diabetes-related complications, such as kidney disease progression.

However, like any medication, Ozempic is not without potential side effects. The most common side effects reported include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These side effects are usually mild and resolve over time. Less common side effects include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.

Overall though, this is incredibly good. Ozempic shows great promise for managing type II diabetes. However, I would still argue that it’s better to manage symptoms – and often reverse type II diabetes, or at least pre-diabetes – by losing weight naturally and living an active lifestyle.

Why should you explore other avenues?

Weight management is crucial in managing type II diabetes and its symptoms. While medications like Ozempic have their benefits, weight loss has several advantages that make it a vital component in diabetes management. It should be a priority over and above pharmacological intervention whenever and wherever possible.

Do note that it won’t be practical for all patients, so ensure you consult your healthcare provider to determine the best treatment plan for your specific circumstances and health concerns.

Type II diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by the body’s resistance to insulin or inadequate production of insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels. Obesity and excess weight are significant risk factors for developing type II diabetes – controlling them is one of the biggest things you can do to manage symptoms or even reverse or avoid it altogether.

This is because, when you are overweight or obese, your body will become less sensitive to insulin, making it difficult for insulin to effectively regulate blood sugar levels.

Therefore, keeping your body fat levels at a healthy level will be one of the ways to improve insulin sensitivity and better manage type II diabetes. By shedding excess pounds, you can improve your cells’ responsiveness to insulin, allowing for better glucose transportation from the bloodstream into the cells.

This will mean improved blood sugar level control.

Weight loss offers various additional benefits for those suffering with type II diabetes above and beyond improving insulin sensitivity.

For example, it can reduce the need for diabetes medications or exogenous insulin, and even help some people achieve remission from the disease. Losing weight has been shown to decrease the risk of diabetes-related complications, such as cardiovascular diseases, nerve damage, kidney problems, and eye issues. It can also help improve overall cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Thus, it will likely be a far better option than simply taking something like Ozempic – though it will, of course, be harder. Weight loss is rarely easy, otherwise we would all maintain healthy body composition.

Weight loss will need a couple of things. Or, rather, it needs one main thing – it needs a calorie deficit. If you eat fewer calories than your body naturally uses, then your body will reach into your energy reserves to make up the difference. These reserves are your body fat.

Try a deficit of around 500 calories daily for every pound you aim to lose each week. If you can, take your remaining calories from a well-balanced, protein rich diet, and try to maintain an active lifestyle, ideally with some form of resistance training in place (which can in itself help insulin sensitivity).

Happily, there is a class of supplements tailor-made to make this whole process easier and more effective.

You may find some unpleasant side effects when trying to lose weight – brain fog and low energy, a slowed metabolism, poor athleticism and drive, and, of course, hunger pangs and cravings, to name just a few. Good-quality thermogenic fat burners can help, here, undoing these side effects whilst keeping your metabolism functioning near optimally.

Natural weight loss supplements

Natural weight loss supplements, including thermogenic supplements, are products made from natural ingredients that are believed to aid in weight loss and boost metabolism. They will typically contain herbs, botanical extracts, vitamins, minerals, or other natural compounds that have been traditionally used for their potential fat-burning or metabolism-boosting effects.

Aside from this, plenty offer additional benefits like improved satiation and resistance to hunger pangs, improved energy, reduced stress and anxiety (prevalent during weight loss, and ruinous for cravings), improved athleticism, and so on. In fact, the better ones can almost completely undo the negative side effects associated with following a calorie-controlled diet.

And, happily, I’ve got a list of some of the better to hand, many of which I’ve used myself to great effect over the years.

Our top weight loss supplements

PhenQ capsules in hand next to bottle

PhenQ is one of my favorite weight loss aids. It’s made by Wolfson Brands, one of my favorite supplement companies – they also make my go-to nootropic NooCube, plus an excellent natural testosterone booster called TestoPrime, as well as their very effective CrazyBulk range.

As with everything in this list, PhenQ is not a magic bullet. The effect on your total calorie burn will be modest at best – 50 to 100 calories extra daily, if any at all.

It won’t work without a well-structured, restricted eating plan in place with at least a 500-calorie daily deficit. If you don’t have this in place, no natural supplement will do a thing for weight loss.

Still, though, that 50 to 100 calories can go a long way to optimizing your weight loss as and when it kicks in.

And it’s not all about calorie burn with this kind of supplement. It should do plenty for your weight loss journey. PhenQ’s formula takes a unique blend of natural ingredients that target multiple aspects of weight loss.

The key ingredients include α-Lacys Reset, Capsimax Powder, chromium picolinate, caffeine, nopal, and l-carnitine fumarate.

α-Lacys Reset is a patented blend of alpha-lipoic acid and cysteine that boosts metabolism and accelerates thermogenesis, leading to a lot of that increased calorie burn and fat loss. Capsimax Powder contains capsicum, piperine, caffeine, and niacin (vitamin B3), aimed at enhancing thermogenesis and supporting fat metabolism. These both work together very nicely.

Caffeine plays well into this, too. It’s a familiar stimulant that increases energy levels, improves focus, and supports fat burning and metabolism, all things that are sorely, sorely needed during any kind of weight loss eating plan.

Chromium picolinate is the main one I’m looking at specifically for diabetes management, though. It helps to regulate blood sugar levels, reducing cravings for carbohydrates and sugars, improving that all-important insulin sensitivity, and improving nutrient absorption.

Nopal, derived from the prickly pear cactus, is rich in fiber and nutrients. Fiber aids in appetite control, digestion, and satiation. L-carnitine fumarate, an amino acid, helps the body burn stored fat for energy, thus very ably supporting weight loss efforts.

As ever, it’s no substitute for a good weight loss diet. It’s no substitute for a solid diabetes management plan, which your healthcare provider will be able to arrange with you. But it should play into both very well, proving a very valuable ally.

Capsiplex Trim

Capsiplex Trim capsules next to bottle

Capsiplex Trim comes to us from Bauer Nutrition, another well-known health and wellness company. It does much the same as PhenQ, giving you some similar benefits as you look to lose weight.

The main ingredient in Capsiplex Trim is capsicum extract, which is derived from (red hot) chili peppers. Capsicum is one of the best thermogenic ingredients out there, known for its ability to bolster metabolism and stimulate calorie burning.

The active component in capsicum extract, called capsaicin, has been shown to increase body temperature, leading to greater energy expenditure.

Besides capsicum extract, Capsiplex Trim also contains plenty of the usual suspects so often found in these kinds of weight loss supplements. These include caffeine, L-tyrosine, and niacin.

Caffeine, as we know, is one of the best stimulants going for boosting energy levels, improving focus, and supporting metabolism.

L-tyrosine, meanwhile, is an amino acid that may help reduce stress and increase mental alertness, whilst niacin is involved in energy metabolism.

In addition, Capsiplex Trim also contains Innoslim, arginine, and chromium. Innoslim is a patented blend of Panax notoginseng and Astragalus membranaceus extracts, which aid in blood sugar regulation, reducing insulin resistance (so a big win here, of course), and aiding in weight loss.

Arginine is an amino acid that helps with the production of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, improves circulation, and supports healthy cardiovascular function. And, as we’ve seen, chromium is also a big one for supporting the body’s production of insulin, helping to regulate blood sugar levels, reduce cravings, and maintain a healthy weight, whilst fitting our purposes well.

The combination of these ingredients is intended to support weight loss by increasing metabolism, suppressing appetite, and promoting fat burning.

It overreaches a bit. It over-promises. For example, its website says ‘Did you cheat on your routine over the weekend? Get your body back on track fast with TRIM’… this won’t work.

It won’t help you to overcome poor eating choices. It also claims that it is ‘also great for bulking… it makes sure you get those mass gains… without packing on fat’… Again, nope. You’ll struggle to put muscle on without a calorie surplus, which is the opposite of what we’re going for here. You’ll struggle to build muscle without a little fat, too. The body just happens that way.

Finally, they promise ‘WE BRING NOTHING BUT HONESTY’. Ahem… nope.

But still, the formula is kind of sound. It will do a lot for you, just nowhere near as much as the manufacturer promises. You will still need a healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet with an in-built calorie deficit, and a doctor overseeing it all if type II diabetes is indeed a concern.

Phen24 is one of my favorite weight loss supplements. It’s unique and innovative, in that it offers a comprehensive 24-hour solution to support your weight loss journey.

Also manufactured by Wolfson Brands (a great start already – they are the same company behind PhenQ), Phen24 is specifically designed to address the challenges associated with weight loss both during the day and at night.

Phen24 consists of two distinct formulas: one for daytime use and another for nighttime use.

Each formula is carefully made with a blend of ingredients that cater to each one’s specific needs.

The daytime formula contains ingredients such as caffeine, guarana extract, cayenne powder, and phenylalanine. These ingredients work together to enhance energy levels, increase metabolism, and promote fat burning throughout the day.

Caffeine and guarana extract provide a natural energy boost and improve focus, while cayenne powder and phenylalanine support thermogenesis, which aids in calorie burning.

It does everything that a good thermogenic fat burner should, in short. It’s impressive and useful, and will really complement a weight loss diet and active lifestyle.

The nighttime formula of Phen24 takes a different tack (it couldn’t very well dose you with caffeine, could it?). It focuses on promoting restful sleep and reducing evening cravings, which can make or break a weight loss diet – nighttime fridge raids often derail my efforts during a cut!

It includes ingredients like glucomannan, green tea extract, Griffonia extract, hops extract, and vitamin B6.

Glucomannan is one of my personal favorite ingredients in any kind of weight loss context. It is a dietary fiber known to promote a feeling of fullness and reduce cravings – it swells in the stomach up to fifty times its starting size, meaning far better satiation.

Green tea extract and Griffonia extract contribute to better sleep quality and relaxation, whilst hops extract helps to reduce nighttime food cravings. We’ve also got that vitamin B6 here, which supports normal energy-yielding metabolism.

By targeting both day and night, Phen24 recognizes the importance of a healthy sleep pattern and acknowledges that metabolism and calorie burning continue during sleep. This unique approach sets Phen24 apart from other weight loss supplements in the market.

It’s clever and very, very useful. It’s what I go for when I know that I’ll struggle to sleep well and resist the fridge at 2am (which is relatively often – I’ve used it a few times!).

Instant Knockout Cut

Instant Knockout is Roar Ambition’s contribution to this list. They’re a well-established company specializing in sports and fitness supplements, and they’ve brought us something quite tremendous here.

It isn’t for the faint-hearted. The energy boost you get from the caffeine it contains is pretty epic, which can be really good for plenty of people… it can also be a little dangerous, so you need to be careful if you’re caffeine sensitive in any way.

The key ingredients in Instant Knockout are carefully thought out.

This begins with green tea extract, which is rich in antioxidants and catechins. These can help boost metabolism and promote fat oxidation. It may also increase energy expenditure, leading to more calories burned throughout the day.

We also have cayenne pepper, which as we’ve seen contains capsaicin, a compound known for its thermogenic properties. Capsaicin can increase body temperature, thereby boosting metabolism and promoting fat burning. We also see the return of glucomannan, which we’ve seen is a natural dietary fiber that expands in the stomach.

The caffeine anhydrous is a big deal in Instant Knockout’s formula. Instant Knockout contains 300mg caffeine per serving, which will provide a decent energy kick and could double-up as a pre workout if necessary.

It’s a lot – near enough your recommended daily limit in one go, so really do be careful with it.

Finally, you get chromium to help regulate blood sugar levels and control cravings, and vitamins B6 and B12, which both play a crucial role in energy metabolism and can help maintain energy levels during weight loss efforts.

If you’re healthy and active, have no sensitivities or issues with caffeine, and you’re trying to keep weight down without losing any energy, Instant Knockout may be a really good idea. If not, you may want to look elsewhere.

Hunter Burn

Hunter Burn capsules

Finally, we have Hunter Burn, yet another premium weight loss supplement from Roar Ambition (they also make Prime Male, an elite testosterone booster I often use personally, and Hunter Focus, a fantastic nootropic supplement).

The list begins with konjac root extract, which is glucomannan to you and me. As we’ve seen, it’s one of the best fibers going for weight loss, hence its repeat presence in the supplements in this list. It promotes the feeling of fullness and reduces appetite like no other.

For our purposes, however, white kidney bean extract is kind of the star of the show here. It contains a compound called Phaseolus vulgaris, which inhibits the activity of the enzyme alpha-amylase.

This enzyme is responsible for breaking down carbohydrates into sugar, so by inhibiting its activity, white kidney bean extract may help reduce the absorption of carbohydrates and control blood sugar levels.

Then there is matcha green tea, which works similarly to the green tea we’ve already seen on this list. It is high in antioxidants and catechins, which can help boost metabolism and support fat burning. It provides a natural energy boost without the jitters that can be associated with other sources of caffeine.

We get a little L-theanine from it, too, though they bolster this with an extra supply for some really nice mental health benefits – l-theanine has a calming effect, reducing stress and promoting relaxation without causing drowsiness. It also complements the energizing effects of matcha by providing a focused and sustained energy boost.

We also see a vitamin D3 kick, which plays a crucial role in overall health, including metabolism regulation and immune function. It can support healthy weight management and improve overall wellbeing, and in men particularly can help to bolster natural testosterone output.

It’s a lean list (no pun intended), and you pay a pretty penny for it – eighty-odd dollars or more for a month’s supply. Honestly, I’d say it’s not worth it for the money, but it’s still a good formula.

If you want to try it, then go ahead – you’ll likely see some benefits. You may also get some benefits from a simple multivitamin paired with separate konjac root and a cup of matcha tea each day… or, more likely, from another offering on this list.

But still, it’s decent, if priced too high, so I thought I’d give it a good showing here.

PhenQ bottle open with capsules

I would urge anybody to try losing weight as a first resort when trying to manage symptoms of type II diabetes. Of course, this depends on your weight loss being possible and signed off on by your healthcare provider.

But, if you can, you will ultimately be far healthier, and be far more able to deal with your diabetes, than you would if you remain overweight.

This needn’t pit a weight loss supplement against drugs like Ozempic. However, weight loss should be the end goal, rather than simply putting a band aid on your symptoms, which Ozempic and its like does.

If you want to go with a quality, natural, over-the-counter thermogenic fat burner, you should consider PhenQ. It offers a comprehensive approach to weight loss by addressing various aspects such as appetite control, fat burning, and energy enhancement, whilst undoing many of the negative side effects associated with running a weight loss diet.

In doing so, it gives you just about the highest-quality support available on the modern supplement market. I’ve used it to great effect myself at times. It really does help out a lot.
