Antioxidants and phytochemicals—your personal body guards

Antioxidants and phytochemicals—your personal body guards

People talk a lot about antioxidants and phytochemicals. We know that they’re important for health, but let’s break it down a little further.

Within each and every one of our cells, is our DNA. DNA is the genetic code that makes us who we are; it codes for all the genes that create our organs, enzymes, and proteins. If our DNA gets damaged, it can create errors in the code which can lead down the road to cancer and other diseases.

Our DNA gets damaged all the time, from injury, UV radiation from the sun, and as a normal process of aging. These damaging chemicals are called free radicals—they bounce into our DNA and cause mutations. The problem is when the damage isn’t corrected or protected against—that can overwhelm the system and lead to the problems previously mentioned.

Antioxidants and phytochemicals help protect our DNA. They are like guard dogs that sit outside our cells and then rush in to fight free radicals. They’re able to neutralize them and prevent them from mutating our DNA.

So where can we find the greatest source of antioxidants and phytochemicals? You guessed it—our diet. Brightly colored fruits, vegetables, and legumes are chock-full of these protective substances. That’s why it’s so important to move toward the optimal diet, your longterm health depends on it. The more antioxidants you flood your body with, the slower the aging process, and the more longevity you’ll have.
